Taking the pressure out of discovering your purpose

‘In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.’ Ephesians 1:11-12 ESV

We live in an age where discovering your purpose includes a trail of personality tests, weekend retreats, and purpose-driven paperbacks. This often leaves us selfishly striving and stressed out.

What drives us to seek purpose in life is an inner longing to make a difference. We want to leave our fingerprints on the face of this earth as proof that we were here.your purpose, God's purpose

Changing the world is at the core of who God is. We don’t have to live with looming pressure to figure out our purpose when we’re making a difference in living God’s purposes. God desires us to live a life trusting and praising Him, loving and serving others, and to make His name known.

When we choose to live God’s purposes in our home, our job, and around the neighborhood, we live with a satisfied heart that radiates unmistakable peace and undeniable joy.

Your purpose is to live out His purpose.

How are you living out God’s purposes in your life today? Where can you be more intentional with living God’s purposes in your life?

Father God, You are so gracious with us. We know that in all things You are working for the good of those called according to Your purpose. Help me to seek Your purposes, to live obedient to Your Word, and to honor You with the roles and tasks you’ve set before me that your greatness and glory might be revealed.

How to fulfill your purpose

desperation, gods purpose, gods presence
When we want God to do something in our lives, the first step is to get closer to His presence. Bringing our brokenness, we don’t have to beg God for a blessing or for an answer to our prayers. He wants to do good things for his children.

The people of Judah were already in a state of distress when their king had died (Isaiah 6:1). God had warned this nation of severe judgment for their wicked ways. With an enemy threatening an attack on the land, the people of Judah had questions and doubts concerning their future. Everything was so up in the air. With surmounting fear and hesitancy, Isaiah, desperate for answers, got in the presence of the Lord.desperation, gods purpose, gods presence

Here on his knees, Isaiah received a revelation from God. The holiness of the Lord shined a light on the sin and darkness in Isaiah. “Woe is me! For I am lost and a man of unclean lips.” Isaiah 6:5 NIV

This was a work of humility in Isaiah. It was the place of brokenness and surrender that allowed Isaiah to be used by God.

We are not strangers to God.

We don’t have to convince Him for salvation. You and I have full access to his favor and healing. We don’t have to beg for access to His goodness, His grace, His provision, and mercy. God’s children have access to His sufficiency through Jesus. You just need to accept it.

When we operate in our own ability and power, we only glorify ourselves. And when we use our solutions to address a situation, we have the potential to do more damage than good. A believer’s aim is not to be spiritual know-it-all’s. Our goal is for the Holy Spirit to be the reigning voice inside us.

When we walk in His presence, we operate out of His power.

There are times God allows a desperation in our soul, spiritually, to draw us back into His presence.

In desperate places, the temptation is to take matters into our own hands. We might create a list of things we need to change. We might want to fix our own failures. In the end, we learn that trying to make ourselves good enough for God is futile.

There’s no spiritual work happening in our hearts when we take matters into our own hands. When we operate out of our own strength, we try to do what only Jesus can do for the soul. When the Holy Spirit brings conviction to your heart, it’s not because He thinks you can clean up the mess in your strength.

Our Restorer will repurpose sin to draw us into His presence.

Sometimes our circumstances corner Jesus with bitterness. We might hold grudges against God because our situation isn’t good. It hurts. So we spend less time in His presence. We might even rebel against everything God wants from us. That’s what Judah did. The devil will devise every distortion of the truth to draw us away from God’s purpose, which is being in the Healer’s presence.

When a tragedy has us asking ‘why,’ the answer begins with bending our will to His.

Isaiah 6, God's Purpose, God's PresenceIf it’s not a place of pain that’s driving us away from God’s presence, it can be the competition of our own priorities.

The volume of our to-do’s and want-to’s can drown out the whisper of a should-do in the stillness with Jesus.

Often we wait until our plans hit a roadblock, or until things aren’t working out the way we rigged them before we seek favor from the Father.

When we release the weight of control in our grip and reach this position of surrender, God can go to work in His power and His grace.

Your problems are meant to point you to His strength. This is His grace.

It’s our brokenness and submission that opens our spiritual ears to hear from God. Once Isaiah humbled himself (Isaiah 6:5), God delivered a word.

In God’s presence, with God’s word, Isaiah was able to walk out His purpose.

God has a purpose and a plan for you.

Living out the purposes of God begins with being in the presence of God.

The Power of Purpose

victor franklWhen a person can’t find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure. – Victor Frankl

Donald Miller shared this wonderful quote in his book, Scary Close. It’s such a profound statement, I want to unravel a couple threads about pleasure and how we find meaning.

Man isn’t seeking pleasure as much as he was seeking a deep sense of meaning. If man has no meaning, he will numb himself with pleasure.

The problem is pleasure isn’t lasting; it satisfies the moment until we wake up without a purpose again. Give man meaning and he will stop chasing the distractions.

How do we give our lives some meaning?

One way is to be honest about the brokenness. When we hide our affliction, flaws, and failures, we miss out on the power of the gospel.

This isn’t oversharing to seek attention. It’s a “me too”, honest approach to helping others. You’ll know the difference when you examine your motive for sharing. If your story points back to you as the source of strength, then you’ve taken away any power accessible to those who aren’t you. gospel, saving grace, trishakeehn.com

If you stuff the beauty of the gospel under a stage of your own strength, you steal the show from saving grace.
When we admit our story has failures and also God’s grace is enough, then we have given power to the gospel.

My life is a mess and I don’t have it figured out, but my hope rests in the mercy of a loving Father.

Don’t mistake no as the answer.

Persevere

There are times God doesn’t close the door. Someone just told us no. Don’t mistake no as the answer. This is how perseverance grows.

Conversely, sometimes you get a yes and you know that’s not an open door for you. Hold out for something better.

When you know where your purpose, passion and skills intersect for greatness, it turns your questions into answers.

Perennial Prayers

Your deepest desires are for companionship and a noble purpose. We were woven with love, to give love and we’ve been clothed in armor to carry out a calling.

But are you masking your true passion behind a facade of good looking pursuits? The battle between head and heart is lifelong.

perennialprayersmaxPrime your purposes in perennial prayers in proximity to God’s promises.

God’s promises have no expiration date. He loves nothing more than to keep His promises, as He watches and waits for the moment to be called upon.

What are those promises?

You shall also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light [of God’s favor] shall shine upon your ways. Job 22:28, AMP

And this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the Lord, have spoken! Isaiah 59:21, NLT

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Psalm 84:11, NIV

We doubt God because we doubt ourselves. His capacity to give is far more greater than our capacity to receive. He’s waiting to answer our prayers, keep His promises and perform His word. When we stand on His Word, He stands by His Word. So what are you waiting for?
