The Gift You Long For

Everything seems urgent at this time of year and expectations tell us all the going and doing is very important.

The calendar controls our time but we’re so overwhelmed to even realize this pressure is the pulse driving whether we keep up or stay ahead. ‘Rush’ repurposes peace into a chaotic Christmas story we tell around the tree through short tempers and careless thinking.

It’s a time to celebrate, but walking into a worship service even reminds me of work; people I haven’t had a breath to get back to. It’s been so long since our schedules have seen some blank spaces that plotting out this dreamy word peace feels like a burden.

We’re being robbed, my friend. The onslought of life’s pressures have started to dominate and define us.

Some of it isn’t even bad. We might be wrapped up in so many seemingly good things, like our jobs, the church, charities yet at the end of the day we still don’t have our peace and quiet.

It feels like we’re slaves here.

Enter Exodus. The second book in the bible. The Israelites were bossed around by taskmasters all day and night. They were slaves to the demands and saying ‘no’ wasn’t an option.

It’s as if this ancient, living Word just ripped a page out of my daily planner and planted the story near the beginning of the book because the Author knew someone who needed this kind of message didn’t have much time to dig any deeper… should even an hour in the day open up to get this far.

Back to the book, even though God sends Moses to free these people from the physical demands, their minds were stuck in a slave mentality. The Israelites didn’t know what it looked like to stop or pause from work.

slaves to schedules, slaves aren't in charge, slaves have no control, the clock controls slaves, work controls slaves, trishakeehn.comGod has sent a way to relieve us from the tension. We’re just not choosing it. If there’s a cancellation on our calendar, it becomes open season.

The thought of deliberately choosing rest around this time of year feels almost unthinkable – family is flying in or you’re flying out, kids have written out their wish lists, parties are being planned and friends are expecting you to be there – because it all lands on people who still think the way a slave thinks.

The enemy will tell you that sketching out even a half inch margin around this to-do list is impossible. When you decide to permanently mark peace into your plans, the enemy will use friends and family to jab at your choice, compare their life with yours and say that you’re selfish with your time.

Since when did other people determine your worth? Busyness has never been declared a badge of honor in the realms of what matters most. Working more will never earn you favor in the eyes of what’s really important.

So why is it so difficult to press pause on the pressure? Mostly because you’ve been bullied into thinking it’s up to you to protect your reputation. You’ve become motivated by the fear of failure so insecurity has you pushing harder to achieve ‘big’ things and impress other people.

You could be intimidated by the quiet places because it feels less important there, so you pick up the torch of self-reliance to accomplish something. May I suggest it could have something to do with your kids and being obedient to their beck and call?

Slaves don’t control the clock; the work controls them.freedom, standing firm, yoke of slavery, Galatians 5:1, slavery, trishakeehn.com

If your devoted time with God has been replaced over a period of time, you’ve diminished power in the present because you lost your allegiance to the one thing that’s most important.

Our culture continues to spin this merry-go-round of achievement, production, and results faster and faster, but the answer isn’t to keep up. No, the solution is to step off.

It is for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

The fear of what others will say or think about your ‘no’ is straight up from the enemy.

If you aren’t claiming your time, someone else will. There is a serious battle for your contentment, your peace, your rest, your health, even your ability to worship attentively. The enemy will use whatever leverage he can get a grasp on take away your freedom and satisfaction in Christ, your trust in God and your availability to move at the invitation of our Author’s perfectly timed will.

We are not here to be slaves to schedules. You don’t need to keep hustling. You’ve already received approval from the only One whose approval really matters. His value IS your value.

your values, who you are, God wants good things for you, trishakeehn.comGod doesn’t want something from you. He wants something for you. Your value is not in what you do but in who you are.

You deserve to live at your best in every area of life so start with focusing prayers on getting free from the pressure.

God will send the Spirit’s power to help you gain control of your day by creating quiet corners that anchor the intersection of chaos and God’s best.

Declare some boundaries based on your devotion to this place of peace and know that everything else will ultimately benefit by your clearer focus.

Surrendering your schedule to rest cultivates a calm spirit so that your words spring from a well filled with joy and love. Your walk will be guided by patience with people, instead strain and stress. Your body will wake up renewed and ready to start again tomorrow.

In your effort to practice more peace this year, you may not have presents for everyone under the tree. More mail may come in than cards going out. Friends might have to wait until January to see you again.

Sometimes it’s not what you carry in your hands that will have impact with people. It might be what’s in your heart that leaves an impression.

As I type out these final thoughts, the hair stylist is wrapping my hair up in foils because these are the very few silent moments I have left to write. I’ve struggled with being stretched during this season. My faithfulness to rest has been less than honorable.

My hope is to find this place of peace so that I may be fully present with loved ones in the following days. My prayer is to leave the season feeling more satisfied than any pretty paper or package could ever offer.

Strength through the struggle

trishakeehn.com, be immovable, 1 Corinthians

Do you ever wake up in the morning and feel like you’re already surrounded by problems and pressures that are left over from the night before?

You may be overwhelmed with needs, uncertainty, hurt, burdens, to-do lists and regrets and you haven’t even thrown back the covers yet.

What if the strength you’re searching for is in you already and you just can’t see it yet?

As long as your focus stays fixated on the issues and obstacles, you’ll miss the opportunity to let courage control your thoughts.

The Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, has already gone before every one of your battles and equipped you with armor you’ll need for the attacks coming.

And He’s bracing you from behind too. He’s got your back.

Your struggle is less about your own maturity and more about what you believe.

Your help is here. Your supply is here. Your strength is here.

Can you see it?

Though you’re tired by all the trouble, close your eyes and rub the seeds of doubt and disbelief from the corners of your mind. Now look again. Let your gaze fall upon the hills, where your help is mounted up and surrounding the very things that surround you.

It would be nice if God’s help was to keep us from hardships and prevent the problems from ever happening in the first place. But let’s be honest. As long as you strain hard enough, your success will point to your own efforts.

Pride tells us we have all the power and strength and there is no purpose for faith or trusting in a God we can’t see. Yet, the scriptures are stacked with stories rooted in human weakness, soaked in the supernatural strength of God.

trishakeehn.com, pain, compassion, hope

Allow your problems to humble you, refine you, and use you more effectively. The places where we are pressed can most likely be where God wants us to plant hope. Compassion permeates from our pain.

You have a Defender who will deliver you with the very thing the devil meant to destroy you. When the enemy has a strategy to take you out, God always has a plan to keep you in and moving forward.

Let God pummel the enemy by bringing so much good from the bad that Satan will regret ever having taken you to that wilderness in the first place.

God wants to show you His faithfulness through your failures and strengthen you through the struggles.

But you may have to see it through your weakness.

So look again! There is potential in your problems and purpose through your pain. You can have confidence in the chaos and confusion. God downpours a great supply in the drought of your need.

You can’t control the circumstance but you can believe in a Father who loves you… still. In the darkest of hours, He is the supply of strength standing on a ground of grace.

Keep trusting. He’s already given you all you need.

It’s our faith that activates God’s power. If you’ve been standing and believing for a while, don’t give up! Press through. Keep praying. Keep asking. Keep seeking, and He’ll meet your faith with favor and His miraculous power.

Often times we’re surprised by our struggles. We can even be caught off guard when it’s the same stuff we’ve been wrestling with for so long. We give the enemy credit for being clever when he throws the same punch to our weak spots. Why?

What if we weren’t surprised?

What if we really did come to expect these kinds of ordeals, not as pessimists but as the prepared?

What if we did come to expect that life was going to push us with pressure?

What if we were ready in advance for things like temptation and oppression?

Plant your feet solid and bend your knees to brace your body for the impact, because I’m warning you from the Word, its coming. If you’re not prepared when the push comes, you will be shoved into a sinkhole of despair.

Let us not be prepared for only the pressures but also for the divine power.

Although we feel alone in our afflictions, I’m here to remind you we’re all in this together. As the persecutions mount and the pressures pound, remember God has already given us victory through Jesus. None of these struggles and trouble will be wasted. They will all work out for our good. We are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us (Romans 8:37). Our perseverance will be rewarded (Hebrews 10:35)trishakeehn.com, be immovable, 1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my dear [friend], be… immovable” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

I pray that God opens your eyes so that you may see the strength that is already in you. Keep an open and humble heart so that His peace can help you press through to pain and find its purpose and His plan.

A Counterfeit To Your Greatness

A few days ago, I received a spoken prophesy warning of counterfeits. This caution sparked an analysis of what deception from the devil looks like.

Counterfeit: made in imitation so as to be passed off fraudulently or deceptively as genuine.

Satan is a counterfeit of Christ. He tries to mimic the Almighty to deceive. When bad things happen, we blame the devil.

However, here’s the concept of a counterfeit:

as close to,

virtually the same as,

often mistaken for,

the original object.

The only difference between a wannabe and it’s prototype is a small degree.

A slight compromise.

A teeny, tiny, nearly undetectable adjustment.magnifying glass

An imitation resembles the original so well that a test of infrared lights
must be used to detect flaws.

With the eyes, it is impossible to detect some of Satan’s sneaky attempts. With a
magnifying glass, a small alteration looks like a big mistake!

This isn’t a warning to raise skepticism, but rather a reminder of the enemy impersonating an Almighty God.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

Anything under pressure will extract from the core in this process. The heart of a soul emerges under testing.

The good news for believers is the access to a supernatural light that illuminates the hearts of men to expose motives.

The bad news for believers is the absence of alarm for slight settlements to integrity that this access is often overlooked.

prowling lionBe alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

My advice; keep the light on!

By filling up on God’s Word and walking in it, we create an inviting home in the heart for His Spirit to take up residency in.

Studying scripture helps the mind become a better detective to decipher Truth from what Stephen Colbert describes as ‘truthiness’, stating concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.

Counterfeit doesn’t necessarily mean bad. Imitation looks more like good.

The enemy is a counterfeit. He mimics an awesome God everyday and gets pretty good at it.

Don’t settle for good when our Creator made you for great!

Greatness is your inheritance.

A Comfortable Conundrum

The thermostat arrow has been brushing 90 degrees for nearly a week in my house. Under the rising temps of the Tennessee summer sun, I was informed the air conditioning compressor broke. I am hot and my temper is infuriated with each passing minute inside these walls. It feels like a furnace of frustration stewing in a sauna of a waiting room.

I’m convinced the devil is turning up the heat so I won’t be able to write in the comfort of my own home. So during the day, I uproot to a Starbucks lounge to pen out my manuscript. It’s a huge hassle because I have not mastered the art of packing light.

Today I arrived home to find my air conditioning was finally fixed! I swung the door open and a blast of cool air sent a greeting right back. What a great way to come home. I dropped everything and explored the other rooms. The vents were all blowing cold air. I fixed a snack and unpacked my bags. This is the time, right after work, I had scheduled to sit down and write, so I open up my computer. Before long, I find myself running on rabbit trails of distractions; ‘I should pay my electric bill first’, ‘I need to cancel my membership to that company before I forget’, ‘I need to text my sister real quick’, ‘let me check my email to see if I got those tickets yet’. Ugh.

I realized in all this that maybe what I thought to be the devil in disguise was actually God’s hand shielding me from the center of getting comfortable. When I’m comfortable, I don’t do my best work. I begin to relax into the work and get lazy when I’m comfortable. The point that my workouts stop being effective is when I become comfortable with exercise.

Living a life of purpose is rarely comfortable. Perhaps when the heat is up, I am right where God wants me… chasing my passion down with determination to fight the fire and complete what my Author has written with this heart.

God, open my eyes to see the beauty of your hand instead of looking for the blame. You are the strength behind the work of these hands. Steal the show, Jesus, with the words You have yet to write through these hands. To You be the glory God, who is able, through your mighty power at work within me, to accomplish infinitely more than I might ask or even think. (Ephesians 3:20) Amen.

Under Pressure

As I was grilling some pecans, spices and onions to dress up spinach leaves for lunch, I was thinking about how many things I’ve been trapped in stress or worry over and an interesting correlation came to mind. I heat the spices to activate the seasonings, saute the onions to soften their texture and toast the nuts to crisp their shell. By warming up the ingredients, the pressure draws out all kinds of flavor and lets me get the full bodied taste, the core of the food. Do you know what the secret to really good coffee is? The temperature. The hotter the water, the more flavor it draws out from the grounds. The greater the pressure inside the pot… even more flavors steep out!

I think about what happens to me when I’m under pressure. When things heat up, it draws out the core of my being, who I really am. If there’s any ‘bad fruit’ deep down, it comes to the surface real quick. And if the fruit is of the Spirit, it shines through like a beacon of light to the surrounding world. Often we portray ‘being under pressure’ as a bad thing, but  this is the time when God draws the core of our being to the surface… this is when the ‘flavor’ of who we are is extracted for the world to taste. And just as heat and pressure does, I think pressure can sometimes soften our hearts while it toughens the spirit.

I’ve come to understand that when things ‘get heated’ or I’m under pressure, it’s not necessarily a work of the devil.  It could be God drawing out the best in us, our core, our, character to infuse this world with the flavor of His goodness through us. Sometimes we are our best versions of our ourselves, sometimes we do our best work, when we’re under pressure. These are all good things and opportunities for God to show off the sweetness, and maybe a little spice, He’s created us to be. Warning: This is also a chance for the devil to reveal the sourness that’s buried within.

Never Give Up

3 words, never.give.up. This life that we live is a fight to the finish. I was watching the Olympics the other night and they flashed back to 2008 where one of the female runners who was doing hurdles stopped almost toward the end of the race, fell to her knees and cried. She didn’t even finish. I said, “Wow, that is horrible. She didn’t even finish and now she is being ‘glorified’ as a strong runner?” I heard a voice inside. How many times have I fell down during the race to my knees and sobbed? Poor me, I did so horribly, I failed, I didn’t have the victory. And I stop right there in the middle of it all. But God… He encourages us as His children to get back in the race. To train harder for the next go around. To face forward with our eyes on the prize. To be determined. To realize the fullness we have when we are running as opposed to when we are not. Sometimes it takes a coach, an encouraging peer whom God will place in our lives to get us on track. But many times, as I have found in my own life, it is God Himself. He knows it all, He knows us through and through better than we know ourselves. And when we are straining and agonizing as we feel pain and pressure in our race we have to remember the victory in order to press on. The other side of the line. Never.Give.Up.
