Verse 23 Jesus is about 30 years old here when he will begin his ministry on earth.
In the Old Testament, it is noted that 30 years old is the age when priests were to carry out the full duties of their office (Numbers 4:3). John the Baptist was just about 30 years old when he was called out of the wilderness to preach repentance and baptism.
A side note here: Jesus’ ministry on earth will only be for about 3 1/2 years. There’s a lot He’s going to get done in that time frame. And interestingly enough, the book of Daniel and Revelation both outline the exact number of days Jesus will be walking the earth. Some people still think the Messiah is yet to come (the Jewish religion is one of those. They know of Jesus but they don’t think he was/is the Messiah. They are still waiting for the Messiah to come, in fact).
From here, verse 23 to verse 38 we’re going to get the genealogy of Jesus. Here’s where his generational line is. This will prove that Jesus was the generational seed of Eve, who would break the serpent’s head. (Genesis 3:15)
The genealogy of Jesus is going to show that both Mary’s side and Joseph’s side come through the generational line of David, and all the way back to Adam and Eve.
Jesus’ father was Joseph. Jesus’ grandfather on Mary’s side, Mary’s father, was Heli. I won’t go through all the names, but it’s amazing once you know more of the stories about each of these people listed here as a part of Jesus’ heritage.
The whole point of listing these is to prove Jesus is the Son of David that was predicted to come as the Messiah. He is also the Son of Adam and the Son of God. Jesus is the Mediator between God and all the children of Adam – that’s us. And through Jesus, we all have an opportunity to become sons and daughters of the Almighty God. Yes, the Creator God created us in His image. But sin turned us away. And now through Jesus, we can come back into a relationship with a holy God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for fulfilling everything you said would come and happen. As I read Your Word, it instills my trust and faith in what You say is true for my own life. You are the same today as You were back then. You fulfill Your Word today as You did back then. Help me to remember Your faithfulness, Your Truthfulness, when I apply Your Word to my life. I can trust You to fulfill it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
